Famine Port from Leitrim

Post by Mary L. Casey »

Does anyone know which port Famine Immigrants would leave from if they were from County Leitrim (northern part)? Want to trace my Leitrim relatives. I know they sailed from Liverpool to New York but want to know the port they left from in Ireland to get to Liverpool.
: Does anyone know which port Famine Immigrants would leave from if they were from County Leitrim (northern part)? Want to trace my Leitrim relatives. I know they sailed from Liverpool to New York but want to know the port they left from in Ireland to get to Liverpool.
Dear Ms. Casey:
I asked the same question on the Bulletin Board several months ago
and got no response. But since then, I have found some information in
Gerard MacAtasney, LEITRIM AND THE GREAT HUNGER (Carrick on Shannon:
Carrick on Shannon & District Historical Society, 1997.) This is a highly
informative book, easily available from Kenny's Bookshop in Dublin (see
their web site). The ISBN no. is 0-9530485-0-0.
On p. 75, there is a small chart showing numbers of departures from
1851-1855. In 1853, the most frequently used ports in descending order
are: Drogheda, Dublin, Killala/Ballina, Derry/Moville, Belfast,
Warrenpoint/Newry, and Sligo. Despite the figures in this chart, the
impression is given elsewhere in the book that Leitrim people used Sligo
town a good deal.
Hope this helps.
Bob Owens

It is the nearest, as you
will see by the map. My family came to England and settled here in Durham
during/after the famine in 1847. They were from
the North Roscommon parish of Kilronan. The area
borders Sligo and nearby Leitrim (Drumshanbo)
in the same area as yours were from. I know ours
would have used the Sligo as a port because it is
only 30 miles or so from Kilronan and, more
importantly, the local landowner's records (Tenison)
show that he paid for the Kilronan emigrants to
travel from Kilronan to Sligo to get the boat. If
you have an image reader facility on your computer
(e.g. Microsoft Photo Editor or similar) I can
send you an image of the estate record of Tenison
as an attachment to an e-mail message.
Sincerely,
Michael
or so from Kilronan

You've already got messages to that effect, but I thought I would add mine. Good luck!
