Travel to Leitrim

Would like to visit Drumkeel, Parishs of Killargue & Dromahair in Co. Leitrim sometime this next year. Checking the books in the travel section I find there is virtually NO info on Co. Leitrim. Would aprpeciate hearing from anyone familiar or living in the area re. visiting there. What airport would I fly into from US? What is the distance from the airport to Co. Leitrim by rental car? Will I have any difficulty finding places to stay, etc. without reservations, etc? Any information would be appreciated.<br>Barbara<br>BSpadea102@aol.com<p>

Hi Barbara. Since Ireland is such a small country, any airport would be fine. I prefer to fly into Shannon myself because I enjoy the drive up the West Coast. There are lots of beautiful towns along the way, and short detours can take you into Galway City or over to the Cliffs of Moher in Clare, if you're not in a hurry. You could also fly into Belfast - that would be my second choice. The drive from Belfast is very easy and you can see many charming towns that are not often frequented by tourists. If you have some driving time, I'd take a detour and actually drive up the north coast from Belfast along the water across to Donegal. It easily rivals the beauty of the Ring of Kerry, but it's not so crowded. There is not a lot of information on Leitrim because it is not overrun by tourists, thank God. You can find plenty of accomodations, but I would not count on having no reservations. In small towns, B&B's can fill up fast, depending on when you plan to travel. Sligo town is not far from anywhere in Leitrim, so you'd be more likely to get a bed there on short notice.
