County Clare or Cork Mangans

Post by dave mangan »

I visited Innis in County Clare to look for the possible ancestors of the Mangans back in 1975. Lots of Mangans in Innis who have lived in the States, where I now live in Boca Raton, Florida. I'm posting to continue the quest for ancestry. When they burnt down the Customs House/Post Office Records in the Easter Uprising in 1916, all trace of our ancestors' lives when up in smoke with it. I talked with an Irish TV reporter who told me the strongest man in Ireland was a Mangan from Wexford. In Limerick, they said that there were the "Big Mangans" and the "Little Mangans." Since I am of a large stature, they told me to drive to Innis where a lot of 'Big' Mangans dwell. Our family settled in Wisconsin in the early 1840s and we have an application for US citizenship to "Wisconsin Territory" before it became a state in 1848. James Mangan had boarded ship at Cork, family lore had it. The poor fellow was a schoolteacher, was made an officer in the 24th Wisconsin Regiment [recruited by Arthur MacArthur, Douglas's father]. James died in Andersonville Prison Camp after being captured at Chickamauga. I visited his grave last year on my way to Florida, where I live with my family in Boca Raton. The Milwaukee Mangans were a Police Sergeant, a lawyer/judge, and several doctors. I'm still looking for some Mangans from the west-country and will be visiting in 2001 to golf and look up the family possibilities. The famous literary critic Harold Bloom asked my 11-year old daughter Niki in Miami last month if she was related to the great Irish writer [she was getting one of his books signed] and she said 'yes.'

You may want to try www.tiara.ie. This site has a lot of information about Cork as well as many other areas of Ireland. (It also covers the North of Ireland and has the telephone book for it, for those interested in that part of Ireland.)<p>
