Greetings,
I am seeking any information/advice regarding Mary Jane McLaughlin. She was born in 1868 in Balley Feeney allegedly in Roscommon. Her parents were Michael McLaughlin and Catherine Fallon. I have been unable to find Balley Feeney on any map. That's all I've got on her until she showed up in Providence, Rhode Island and married my great-grandfather in 1895.
Thank you very much for your time,
Jane

It is just down the road from
Ballykilcline. Fallon was a surname of tenants
evicted from Ballykilcline during the Famine. The
story is told in the book "The End of Hidden
Ireland" by Robert Scally of NY University.
A search is underway for the Lost Children
of Ballykilcline -- the descendants of those
several hundred evicted tenants. See the web site
at www.ballykilcline.com. Then contact Maureen
McDermott Humphreys or Peter Hanley from the web
site. They are leading the search. A reunion of
descendants is planned in County Roscommon in
August 1999.
Please let me know if you have any Rileys or
Colligans connected with your family. I believe
my immigrant great great grandfather descended
from Michael Riley in Ballyfeeney in the 1820s.
His wife was Ann Colgan (or Colligan).
Many people from Roscommon, and Kilglass
Parish in particular, went to Providence after
the Famine. My ancestors moved on then to
Burrillville, north of Providence, and then to
eastern Connecticut. I can give you more information about Ballyfeeney. Please e-mail me.
Good luck in your search.
Mary Lee Dunn

: Thank you very much for your time,
: Jane

She's the only
household of that surname. There are no Fallons
listed at that time. But there were three
families of Fallons among the Ballykilcline
evictees. See the Ballykilcline web site for
their names.
Mary Lee Dunn
Re: Mary Jane McLaughlin in Balley Feeney
Hi There Jane and Mary Lee
My paternal grandmother Margaret McLoughlin was born at Ballyfeeny on 14 February 1862.
I think I have identified her family in the 1881 UK census for Co Durham:
James McLoughlin Head Age 50
Margaret Wife Age 40
Margaret Dau Age 18
and six other children (one of whom emigrated to Terre Haute, Indiana in the 1890’s)
The children’s places of birth indicate the family emigrated to UK circa 1863.
The only records I found available through the LDS FHC are the Strokestown Parochial Registers 1830-1862 which covered the parishes of Strokestown, Lissanuffy, Cloonfinlough and Kiltrustan. There were plenty of McLoughlins but unfortunately none that I could connect with, and quickly looking through my notes I can’t see your three names. If you are interested I can send you a copy of my notes -- just email and let me know.
These were the only records I could find through the FHC and now I’m at a bit of a loss as to where to look next. I’d be grateful for any suggestions that I can pursue from a distance (I live on the Canadian westcoast at Victoria, British Columbia).
Mary Lee, I’d love to hear any information whatsoever that you can tell me about Ballyfeeny, together with any other sources you know of or can recommend.
