The Name Geenty

Post by John C. Geenty Jr. »

I am a United States citizen with the last name Geenty. I am an attorney in Worcester, Massachusetts. I am interested to find out more about the name Geenty. The only relative I had who was alive up to about a year ago was a great-great aunt Daisy Geenty who lived in Conn. USA. She had told me that our family came from Scotland, Soloway Firth area? My father is John C. Geenty; my grandfather was James Roan Geenty and his father was John Geenty. Daisy told me that our family had been here in the United States prior to 1775 in Northeatern part of Conn. Can anyone shed any light into the name of Geenty?

I know for a fact that this surname (Geenty) was in Co. Roscommon in 1800's. This family: Margaret (or Mary) age 60 in 1847 came to the US with her son Bernard, age 14 and a daughter Bridget, age 16 on 26 Sept. 1847 on the ship 'Metoks'. As your family were in the US prior to 1775, this Geenty family may be a very distant relation. The surname is not listed in "Irish Family Names" by Ida Grehan, 1985, as a surname from ancient surnames of Ireland.
