Hello,
My name is Turlough Whelan, I am a native of Aughavas, my father Michael Whelan was the National school teacher there for almost 40 years, he is
retired now. Since his retirement he has written a book called "The Parish of Aughavas, Co Leitrim - Its History and its People".
This details the parish of Aughavs from early prehistoric times, right up through the famine, to the present day. Some of the chapters are :-
Townlands of Aughavas and their meaning
The 1798 Rebellion
The priests of Aughavas
The Famine
The Land League
Aughavas Emigrants in Oregon
The GAA in Aughavas
Schools and Schooling in Aughavas
The building of St Josehps church in Aughavas
Music in Aughavas
Dance Halls in Aughavas
The War years
and much more...
It also contains a complete census of the parish as it is today. It contains 370 pages of facts and information about the parish and over 250 photos, my
father also has tons of other information (e.g. school roll books, etc.) about the parish that you may find useful. If you wish to get hold of a copy of this
book, e-mail him at "irishmus@mail.indigo.ie" or drop him a line to:
Michael Whelan
Drumgunny,
Aughavs,
Co Leitrim.
Ireland.
I think the book retails at 15 Irish pounds and he still has a stock of them at the house, he would be delighted to send one on. I'm sure he'd be delighted to
answer any other question or queries you may have about your roots in Aughavas.
Regards,
Turlough Whelan.
PS : I will have a web page with more information soon, and will post the URL

Information on Aughavas
Re: Information on Aughavas
Having recently read Michael Whelan's book, I can heartily recommend it. It is well written in every respect, readable, and obviously carefully researched. I found it immensely informative, and, with ancestors having come from Co. Leitrim, I consider it one my most valuable reference works on Leitrim history.
Bob Owens
