When I was looking through the website for information about Killukin, which was supposedly the location of my ggGrandparents' marriage, I found TWO places named Killukin. Can anyone out there help me to figure out how I can go about searching for the marriage? I have the date and the alleged location. When I sent a query to the church in Kullikin I was told there was no record of the marriage there. Now I am confused. I can't for the life of me figure out which Killukin I sent the query to. I am amazed there are two places with the same name.
If it helps to solve the puzzle my ggGrandparents took up residence at the bride's family farm at Lisdaly. Her parents were James and Phoebe JOHNSTON. My ggGrandmother was also named Phoebe. My ggGrandfather was John Alexander McWILLIAM. They married 21 February 1861, and a letter from one of their sons, Arthur, alleges it was near Carrick-on-Shannon.
I would be most grateful for any suggestions!

There are two Civil parishes named Killukin, one in the barony of Boyle and the other in the barony of Roscommon.
Each Killukin Civil parish contains a townland named Killukin.
Lisdaly townland is in Killummod Civil parish and Croghan Catholic parish.
In early years, Croghan Catholic parish was known as Killukin - Killummod Catholic parish.
There is a map of Croghan Catholic parish on the Leitrim-Roscommon map page. See
www.leitrim-roscommon.com/ It includes all of Killukin Civil parish (Barony of Boyle) and the location of Lidaly and Killukin townland (Barony of Boyle). It also shows the location of Carrick on Shannon town.
In early years there was a Church of Ireland Church in Killukin townland in Killukin Civil parish (Barony of Boyle).
At Griffiths Valuation in 1858, James Johnston occupied 43 acres in Lisdaly townland, Killummod Civil parish.
The Civil Registration of the 1861 marriage of John McWilliams and Phoebe Johnston is included in the LDS British Isles Vital Records CD. Note that Civil registration of Catholic marriages did not commence until 1864.
A check of LDS film 101424 might be worth the effort as it will show where the marriage took place, etc.
The 1842 Tithe Applotment records for Lisdaly townland are on LDS film 256643.
LDS film 867949 will show the change of occupiers of Lisdaly townland from 1858 to c1920.

Hello John
Thank you for your input. In the quoted section above you mention that the marriage is included in the CD. Do you have access to that CD? I have only recently found John McWilliam's parents and siblings, all of whom immigrated to New Zealand in the 1860s. It has taken almost 40 years of searching by various cousins for my family to find them all!
If you have access to the CD you mentioned is it possible to get a copy of the page from the CD? I am housebound by a very rare genetic disorder, which is what prompted me to get into genealogy. I have done all of my research over the internet because I cannot go to the LDS Family History Centers. Any assistance in getting my hands on the image from the Vital Records CD would be most welcome.
This is a most interesting response, and I appreciate you taking the time. For quite some time I was looking for the marriage in the hopes that I could learn the forename of John's father to help locate them in New Zealand. Now that I have found them and all the rest of the family in Australasia I only need the record information for citation purposes and to confirm the data.
If anyone has that CD and can help me get my hands on the record I would be most grateful.
Thank you John, and thanks in advance to anyone who can help me acquire that record.

WOW!!!! I don't know how to thank you for this information John. You can be certain that the copy of the map I promised you will be delivered with a great big SMILE!!!
Sorry for the delay in replying to your post with the marriage record. I had not received any notice that a reply had been posted, even though I hecked that option. Must be a bug in the system.
This information is exactly the date I had been given, but I am very sceptical of using anything I have not found a citable source for. Much of the information I've received that has been handed down across the generations is accurate but it is often out of context, making it almost impossible to verify.
I'm deeply indebted to you John. Thanks ever so much.

Trying to your Irish ancestors can be very confusing. There are Civil Parishes, Catholic Parishes, Townships and Baronys. They often overlap each other.
Killukin is a Civil Parish and is part of the Catholic Parish of Croghan, you might find records there.

Most of the Irish civil records were burned in 1916 Easter Rising at the Customs House in Dublin. Try the following Website. You can find the census records from 1901.
