Doing Irish Research in Ireland

I am planning a trip in May to Ireland and will use this time for research. Only planning on one week in Ireland.
What would be the best way to make good use of my time?
I only have a few facts about my Irish side.
I know they came from Leitrim and have three siblings names.
and birth years, but no Parents. I have the immigration records for two of the siblings, in which they say they are from Aghacashel.
Would it be best to do research in Dublin?
Or can one access records locally in Leitrim?
I have seen the web site for
Leitrim Genealogy Centre
County Library
Ballinamore
Co Leitrim
Can an individual search there on their own, or do you have to pay to use their facilities? In looking at their services, which seem to be quite thorough, but at the price of a flight over to Ireland!
Looking for any suggestions on what would be best for a first time investigation of records.
Thanks for any help,
Carole

Hi Carole
I am not familiar with the resources available in the area you mentioned but many records can be consulted in Dublin.
Where to start researching can depend upon the years you are looking for. State registration (for Catholics) began in 1864. Birth, Marriage and Death records can be consulted in the General Register Office (
www.groireland.ie) in Dublin and in some local areas. These can identify addresses and sometimes other family members etc. If you can identify the area then the 1901 (may be on this site) and the 1911 census returns can be consulted in the National Archives (
www.nationalarchives.ie) in Dublin. Many parish records have been microfilmed and can be consulted in the National Library, again in Dublin (these are also accessible from the LDS).
Try and get as much info from the web before your trip. You can get information about townlands and civil parishes on this site. The Irish Times Newspaper (
www.ireland.com) has a good ancestry section (most of it is free). A lot of Griffiths Valuation is also available on
http://members.cox.net/hayes1966/griffiths.htm
If you are looking for the generations before 1864, then local knowledge is probably best. However, the golden rule in hunting is to start from what you know and work backwards!
The very best of luck and enjoy your trip.

Hi Carole
The Leitrim Heritage Centre is very good but they do the work - not you- and I agree they are quite expensive.
Can I suggest that you post what information you have on this site? You may be surprised what information other people may have.
I fully endorse what CA has said about both Dublin and web sources of information and would add one more - The Valuation office in Dublin. If your people had land then they may be recorded here. The office has land records from about 1860 up to the present. For quite a small sum you may be able to trace them in what is known as "the cancelled books"

Hello John,
Thank you for your infomation, and I just received documents from Beverly, Mass a few days ago and it fits with the info you posted.
Patrick Francis Mulvey was the son of Hugh Mulvey and Mary Harvey.
they also had sons
Hugh b. 19 Sep 1865 Drumshanbo
Francis Mulvey b. 06 Sep 1873
Michael Mulvey b. 08 Oct 1867
I have had such a hard time with this family group.
Also in the documents I received, it seems almost the whole family of Patrick Mulvey & Mary Prior died so very young.
Most of the children died in 1911 due to scarlet fever.
Mary herself died in 1910. Her parents were listed on the death record as Thomas Prior and Rose Flynn, as I suspected. And they are they family group I found in the 1901 census at this website.
THANK YOU!! to the hosts of this website!!
Hugh Patrick their oldest son died 1919, in The Marine Hospital in Portland, Maine.
Only their son Frank and daughter Catherine survived past 1920.
Catherine made a trip back to Ireland in 1923, I found her
passage report as she returned to the USA at age 16.
She is my grandmother & married in 1927 Thomas McDermott.
They had five children, then they died and all the children
went into the orphanage of
Mount Lorretto, Mission of the Immaculate Virgin, Staten Island, N.Y. from Feb 1943
I appreciate your input, and will do my best to take in the countryside & people !
Many Thanks,
Carole

Carole - Can I suggest to you that you allow time to complete your search in the Dublin archives after you have completed your research in Leitrim. You might turn up some some details from visiting old graveyards, such as date of death of a ralative that you didn't know existed. Whereby armed with this info. you will be able to get death certs from the Dublin registry.
Good luck and enjoy your visit to Ireland.

Carol,
I have found another resource for those with ancestors born in Massachusetts to be invaluable - it does require a subscription.
http://www.newenglandancestors.org/ They have all or will have all vital records from Massachusetts 1840-1910 on line. Right now it's mostly 1840-1866 and adding more. I did find some references to Prior in Marlborough, Ma in the 1860 time frame. They were living with people whom I believe to have come from the Drumshanbo area of Leitrim. Most Irish in Marlborough at that time married either in Marlborough or went to the Catholic Church in Saxonville - Framingham to get married. Sometimes the Framingham marriage got recorded in Marlborough, sometimes not. I did find a reference to a County in Ireland in a Marlborough death record - that is rare. I have used this database to help me search for connections between the Irish living in my hometown back in the 1850-1860 time period. They all seem to be clustered together.
Also, I know it has been mentioned before but on March 17, Boston College put a database online which connects one to the ads placed by Irish from about 1830 on looking for missing relatives. I have the CD, which is more complete than the database, but I did find the database very helpful as the search engine on the Advance Search allows for a detailed search.
My own experience with the Leitrim Heritage Center was not the best - they sent me information on a Brewin family which lived across Lough Allen and not in Drumshanbo even though I had been extremely specific about my family. Luckily, I had met a person online who was searching for the other family and I sent him the information.
Good luck on your trip - I wish I could go to Dublin and check out the landlord records. When I went to Leitrim many years ago, all I had to go on was the name "Kiltoghert" and got sent to a creamery by the locals. You are well advised to get as much information as you can before you go. Have you checked out the LDS records at the Family search.org site?

Carol,
Have you noticed that there is a person in the Chicago area searching for a John Prior from Kiltubbrid ?
From his website:
"I am researching the Prior Family.John Prior lived in Mullaghgarve, Aghacashel, Co. Leitrium, Ireland from 1871-1938."
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/us ... n-F-Prior/
Good luck.

Carole - As a guide to your visit to the Leitrim Library in Ballinamore where they have a good local studies reference section, you will find plenty of information about the villages you are interested, useful in getting an understanding of the local environement where your ancestors lived.
Keep in mind though, that the library is moving premises during May 2005 to a larger building just down the street, where some books might not be readily available, however recommend that you seek out the Lewis's Topographic Directories (1837) giving info about all local towns and villages. Note: Tithe Applotment Books are held at the Heritage & Genealogy Office (next door to Courthouse). Photo copying service available for a small fee.
Good luck
