FLYNN, MAXWELL, O'DONNELL & RILEY

Post by Elizabeth Bailey »

I am hoping that someone will recognize my Flynn's. The following is the basics of what I know about my great-grandfather and his brothers. The three brother's who came to America in 1839 are:

MICHAEL (MYLES), THOMAS & JAMES FLYNN

MICHAEL (MYLES) FLYNN, born September 15, 1810 in LEITRIM, Ireland. Died March 22, 1890 in Franklin Co. Arkansas. Married Sarah Ann Davis, and had a large family. Religion: CATHOLIC in Ireland, but became a member of the BAPTIST church following his marriage to Sarah. He was a MASON.

My Flynn brother's arrived in New York in 1839, probably in September, per the military records of Myles Flynn.
Myles/Miles/Michael joined the Army and was sent to Florida during the Seminole Indian Wars. He was discharged in November of 1842 - as an "Alien". He is next found in Sevier County Arkansas in 1850. From there he files for , and receives, Bounty Land, moves to Franklin County, Arkansas where he remains until his death.

THOMAS FLYNN; I have no record of Thomas from the time of the 1839 arrival until found with Myles in Sevier County, Arkansas in 1850. He MAY have been in Texas before Arkansas. He moved to Franklin County, Arkansas along with Myles and spent the remainder of his life there. He was born abt. 1820 in Ireland. In 1850 he was married to BRIDGET Unknown. She was born in Ireland. Following the death of Bridget, Thomas married Susan Morgan in 1858. He had a large family. Thomas died December 14, 1900 in Fort Smith Arkansas.
Thomas remained a devout CATHOLIC, and helped to start the Catholic Church in Franklin County, Arkansas.

JAMES FLYNN born abt. 1822 in Ireland was my great-grandfather. I have no record of him between the 1839 arrival and the 1860 census where he is found in Fayette County, PA. From records and family letters I know that James Flynn married ELIZABETH MAXWELL born abt. 1825 in Ireland. Following the death of Elizabeth Maxwell Flynn abt 1885 James Flynn and his youngest son, JOSEPH, went to Arkansas to join Myles & Thomas. I believe (per an old picture made in AR) that James died in Arkansas ca 1900. Related names of the James Flynn family remaining in PA are O'DONNELL & RILEY.

Records of my grandfather JOSEPH FLYNN:

Certificate of Baptism, Immaculate Conception Church, Connellsville, PA, May 5, 1871, JOSEPH FLYNN, Parents: JAMES FLYNN & ELIZABETH MAXWELL.

Death Certificate of Joseph Flynn, May 24, 1951 in Terra Haute, Indiana
Father: JAMES FLYNN
Mother: ELIZABETH MAXWELL
