Hi Larry,I checked the Albany Hall of Records website http://www.albanycounty.com/achor/
to see if James had been naturalized there hoping you could locate his Declaration of Intent which might give the county of origin. No luck. I also checked Pat Connors excellent website to see if James Declaration was among her postings.

Nothing. He may have filed at an earlier date not included on her site.
You may find an exact date of death for James in a Troy City Directory. The Troy directories have sections for Cohoes, Green Island, Waterford, West Troy (later Watervliet) but that does not help with the county of origin. There is a John Heslin's Declaration on Pat Connor's pages for 1879 I think and he was from Westmeath. The largest number of Heslin/Heslans on the Griffiths CD come from Longford, Leitrim and Westmeath.

I would suggest that in order to get some vitals on James and Bridget you first try for some sort of death records here Stateside in NY. They are probably too early for state required vitals however there could be something at the county or city/town level. However, from the death records, you might learn your peoples' partents' names.

If James and Bridget married here, there might also be some information in their mariage record. Check the LDS link I give you for church records that were filmed. You are probably looking for a Roman Catholic Church. You may even find some cemetery records on film at LDS or a listing of RC cemeteries that you might be able to find a website for and contact regarding burials.

Try and narrow down when they might have arrived and died by searching for them on the NY State censuses and federal censuses.

Unless you live in the Albany Co/Cohoes area, you will have to go to your local FHC and order the films from Salt Lake. I don't know which ones cover Cohoes but perhaps the volunteers at your FHC can help you determine this.

On the main page of familysearch.org you can locate your nearest Family History Center. Also, do a search for your individuals here, you may find something if names from records were entered into the database or some other descendant joined the Mormon church and entered the people into the database.


Try also the Albany Co. genweb site for help. I've not used Albany Co, so I have no idea what is there. These genweb sites seem to vary in content and quality as is to be expected with any volunteer effort.
