I have some information about the Leitrim Nugents.
I descend from Cornelius Scollin and Mary Nugent from near Drumshanbo. We know nothing about Cornelius except for his name on two death certificates. We know that his wife Mary Nugent Scollin died in Ireland in January of 1848. Their daughter Mary Scollin died in Ireland in October of 1847, Another child Constantine died in 1865 but we do not know where.
At least three of their children, Henry, Catherine and Margaret, emigrated to Danbury/Redding Connecticut between 1848 and 1850. They were all born in the 1820s.
I have been collecting Scollin/Scollan/Scollen/Scollon and Nugent information from County Leitrim to try and figure out which families I descend from.
Here is what I have and don't have.
I do not have information about the Nugents in Leitrim from the Tithe Applotment of 1833 or so. I do have that information for the Scollins.
I have information from Griffiths Survey from 1856/7.
If you check the Leitrim parish maps on this site, it will help you see how close three of the townlands are to Drumshanbo and each other.
jPatrick Nugent was living in Mullanaleck, Rosclogher, Rossinver. This is in Northern County Leitrim and not of interest to me.
James and Patrick Nugent were in Cormongan, Kiltoghert Parish. This is just a bit to the north of Drumshanbo.
Edward and Peter Nugent were in Aghagrania, Kiltoghert Parish. If you go east from Drumshanbo, Aghagrania is on the Kiltoghert/Kiltubbrid border.
Henry Nugent was in Aghakilbrack, KIltubbrid Parish. This is just a few townlands away from Aghagrania. It is right next to Bunrevagh where there were Scollan families in both Tithe and Griffiths. The distances among all of last three townlands can't be more than a mile or two. I would bet that all of the families are connected.
That's all there were.
www.ireland.com lists marriages from the Leitrim Genealogy Centre. These are definitely not all of the marriages but it's a start.
James Nugent Ellen MacGarry 1831
James Nughet Mary Heany 1837
Henry Nugent Bridget Flynn 1847
Mary Nugent Martin Higgins 1858
Bridget Nugent Laurence Gibbons 1858
Catherine Nugent Matthew Barry 1868
Rosann Nugent Michael Murray 1876
Catherine Nugent Hugh Prior 1890
Bridget Nugent Peter MacPartlan 1891
James Nugent Jane McGovern 1895
Patrick Nugent Mary Geelan 1897/1 ?
Anna Nugent Mathew Donnelly 1898
I wonder if the Henry who married Bridget Flynn in 1847 is the Henry living in Aghakilbrack in Griffiths.
Michael Murray and Rosann Nugent lived in Cormongan. Her father was James abt 1798-1879, She had a sister Mary who married a Flynn. There was an Andrew Nugent mentioned in a will in 1819 living in Gub Cormongan..that's all the information there was.
Mathew Donnelly and Hanagh (Anna) were in Aghakilbrack in 1901 census. Your James and Jane were in Aghakilbrack in 1901 too so Anna/Hanagh is probably his sister.
Now the Latter Day Saints IGI lists the following Nugent births:
Peter Nugent and Rose Gallagher (they were from Aghagrania and she was a widow in 1901)
Mary Anne 1865
Anne 1867
Rose 1870
Catherine 1872
Patrick 1876
Catherine and Patrick were living with the widow Rose in 1901.
Edward Nugent and Mary Mulvy. I believe this family was
also from Aghagrania. Mary, a widow, was living with her son Francis and his familyin 1901.
Francis 1864
Bridget 1868
Hannah 1871
Thomas Nugent and Margaret McRann
James Joseph 1872
Margaret 1873
I do not know which townland.
Patrick Nugent and Honor Campbell
Elizabeth 1869
Ellen 1871
Joseph 1873
Don't know the townland.
James Nugent and Ellen Conroy
Henry 1866
Don't know the townland.
One thing to remember with these records. The church records for Drumshanbo don't start until about 1864 or so. Any records from before that would be from another church, quite probably one of the churches in Kiltubbrid.
www.ireland.com also lists some baptisms for Nugents. This only shows the first name and year. The first one was in 1849. They do show Neugent: Henry in 1896 and Thomas Patrick in 1898 (both from Aghakilbrack).
One more Nugent mention...a Margaret Nugent was a sponsor for Mathew Doyle born in 1839 to Andrew Doyle and Mary Scollin of Corrachoosaun townland. This birth was recorded in Fenagh parish church records. The Doyles lilved on both sides of the Kiltubbrid/Fenagh parish border not too far from Aghakilbrack. This was interesting to me because this Andrew Doyle and his daughter Mary born in 1841 also emigrated to Danbury Connecticut during the famine years. He remarried a few years later. Mary married a Francis Scollin from, of course, County Leitrim.
Finally, there is a Nugent tombstone in the Drumshanbo cemetery:
Patrick Nugent died 1934 age 59
His wife, Bridget O'Brien d. 1955 age 81
son Patrick J. d 1921 age 12
Bridget Rose d 1990
Thomas John d. 1990
Peter d. 1987
I think this family is from Aghagrania.
And in 1901 a John Nugent age 37 was a stone mason living as a boarder in Carrick on Shannon.
I hope that some of this information will help you track down your family. If you should uncover any additional informaton, I'd be interested in whatever you find.
