Leitrim-Roscommon

My Great Grandfather John McCaffrey and my Great Grandmother Anne Sheridan McCaffrey had 5 children - Mary Kate born in 1897, my Grandfather Nicholas Aloysious born 1898, James born 1899, Charles born in 1900, and John born in 1901.

The family lived on High Street in Ballinamore. Mary, Nicholas, Charles and John all moved to New York in the first half of the 1900's.

James lived in Ballinamore in to the 1970's. (I visited him there in 1969.) He married Mary White. They eventually moved to Florida.

Any information about John McCaffrey or Anne Sheridan would be very much appreciated.

I also have roots to Leitrim McCafferys/McCaffreys. My great grandfather was James McCaffery, b. approx 1884 to Bernard McCaffery and Mary Prior. He had an older brother named John. Perhaps my James and your John were brothers? Does the James you visited have any surviving descendants in the area, or elsewhere, with whom you have been in touch?

Hi,

Since the original post, I have learned that the Caffrey's I am looking for were still living in Cavan (Arvagh/Garrymore/Ballinagh) into the 1900's.

Unfortunately I am not aware of any surviving descendants in the area. The James I knew married late in life and had no children. And as I mentioned, he and Mary eventually retired to Florida.

I suspect that he and his Father (my great-grandfather John) actually moved to High Street in Ballinamore sometime around 1920 - 1930, but I have no way to confirm that yet. The other brothers and sisters (including my grandfather) were all over in New york.

I'll repost if/when I learn something new.
