My g-grandmother, born 1830, was Marcella Kelleher. My grand mother corresponded with two Kellehers in the early 1900's, a Celia and a Thomas, both addresses are Coonart, County Leitrim. Any help would be appreciated.

Nancy,
Maybe you are looking for Cloonart, not Coonart.
In County Longford there are townlands named Cloonart Beg and Cloonart More. They are both in Mohill Civil parish and Bornacoola Catholic parish (also in Longford Barony, Longford Poor Law Union, Drumlish Registrar’s District, Newtownforbes Electoral Division).

In Ireland, mail addresses include the town name and county of the Post Office distribution centre in lieu of Zip or Post codes. The postal address for Cloonart Beg townland in Co. Longford would have been: Thomas Kelleher, Cloonart Beg, Mohill, Co. Leitrim.

The map at
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/MAPS/mohill.html shows the location of townlands in the County Leitrim portion of Mohill Civil parish. Not shown are the townlands in the County Longford portion of Mohill Civil parish including Cloonart North and Cloonart South both of which adjoin Cloonmorris (39).

http://homepage.eircom.net/~tina/mohill ... search.htm gives the following explanation:
“Note that the civil parish of Mohill extends into County Longford - this is the part of County Longford north of the Rinn River in the RC parish of Bornacoola. The townlands in the RC parish of Bornacoola, and in the civil parish of Mohill, Barony of Longford, Co. Longford are: …………..Cloonart North, Cloonart South”.

Bornacoola Catholic parish records have been filmed by the LDS:
Film number, Baptisms, Marriages, Burials.
1279224, 1824-1897, 1824-1838 & 1850-1897, 1833-1892.

You can check LDS films for the occupiers of land in Clooncare townland at the c1830 Tithe Applotment and from the c1855 Griffith’s Valuation to c1920. Also the 1901 and 1911 Censuses of Cloonclare townland.

Hope this helps,

John

Thank you, John, I will follow those leads. I should have posted the entire address for each (and checked my spelling!). They are: Celia Kelleher, Cloonart, W3 Dromod, Co. Leitrim, Ire. and Thomas at Cloonart, Johnstones Bridge, Dromod, etc. I found Dromod and the bridge on a tourist site.

Hi.

Just to say that Johnstone's Bridge is a landmark rather than an address, though it does indeed appear on a number of maps. It is very close to the R.C. Church of Bornacoola Parish, although it is actually located on the Longford side of the Rinn River. Strictly speaking the Cloonart townlands are in Longford too, but are, as John says, in Bornacoola Parish, and are quite close to Knockadrinan, where the Church is located. I've found other instances of people quoting 'the bridge' as their place of origin/residence. There used to be a Police Barracks there, so it was something of a landmark around 1900.
