Looking for info on Peter Carlos b abt 1809 Kilgefin, Cloonybeirne. He immigrated between 1834-1843.....before the famine. He settled in Wisconsin, (re) married and had 7 children. An ad in the Boston Pilot placed by Thomas Shaughnessy dated 1856 "looking for Peter Carlos, son-in-law from Kilgefin, last heard from in 1843, headed to Wisconsin". So, I am looking for the Shaughnessy girl he allegedly married. He had a son Michael born in Roscommon who came to Wisconsin in the 1860's, and is on the farm in 1870 census. Peter died in 1868. Can anyone help me figure out if Michael's mother is Shaughnessy? Did she die? Why did Peter come without them? I have lots of info on the family and Michael after they arrived in Wisconsin, but am at a dead end in Roscommon. No records in the Parish before 1860's. Since Peter left before 1843, I am also unable to make any definitive connections with data from Griffith's. Any info is greatly appreciated. Peter is my gggrandfather.

The Catholic parish of Strokestown was formerly called Kiltrustan, Lissonuffy and Cloonfinlough. It included the civil parishes of Lissonuffy, Kiltrustan, Cloonfinlough and part of Bumlin. There were chapels at Strokestown and Scramogue in Bulmin, and in Kiltrustan.

The Catholic parish of Ballagh (AKA Kilgefin) was formerly known as the parish of Cloontuskert, Kilgefin and Curraghroe. It includes the civil parishes of Kilgefin, Cloontuskert and Kilbride. There were chapels in the townlands of Ballagh and Ballyleague, and Four-mile House in Ballinderry. Curraghroe was head of a district which included the civil parishes of Lissonuffy, Clonfinlough and part of Brumlin. Chapels in that district were located in the townlands of Curraghroe in Lissonuffy parish and Carnaskeagh in Clonfinlough parish. Clontuskert and Clonthurskert are variant spellings.

You mentioned Cloonybeirne as the townland where Peter Carlos was born. However, the Boston Pilot index site www.infowanted.bc.edu gives the townland as Cloonybarron. I reckon the townland is actually Cloonycarran in Lissonuffy parish where 4 Carlos names appear in the Griffiths list supplied by John Hunter. Cloonycarran borders Kilgefin parish, which might explain the Boston Pilot listing. The distance between the Shaughnessys of Coggalmore and Coggalstack and the Carlos families of Cloonycarron is about 1 mile - so it is quite possible that Peter had married a Shaughnessy girl.

My theory is that she died after their son, Michael, was born and Peter went to the U.S. leaving the baby to be reared by the Shaughnessy grandparents. The reason for The Boston Pilot query by Thomas Shaughnessy in 1855 may have been to locate Peter so that Michael could join him in America. It seems that the advert. was successful since Michael shows up in the 1870 census with his step-mother and step-siblings. The Kentucky address probably belonged to a relative of Thomas Shaughnessy and was given as a contact point for responses.

The Catholic birth and marriage records for Lissonuffy (which were microfilmed as part of Strokestown parish) date back to 1830. You may be lucky and find either a Carlos/Shaughnessy marriage or the birth of Michael Carlos if you can get a hold of that particular LDS microfilm, as advised by John Hunter.
