Anne,
Don’t be set on the spelling of a surname.

I am researching the family of Margaret Nerney of Cloonboyoge townland, Shankill Civil parish (Elphin Catholic parish) and James Beirne/Byrne of Killummod townland, Killummod Civil parish (Croghan Catholic parish), County Roscommon.
James and Margaret moved to Australia in 1862.

Margaret’s parents were Roger Nerney and Catherine (or Mary) Conry.

Margaret's family lived at Culleen - sometimes called Killeen West, (located about two miles south of the town of Elphin) prior to moving to nearby Cloonboyoge townland before Margaret's birth. Her brother Thomas is listed as born Culleen in 1816. The house in which Margaret was born still stands in 2006 and is occupied by descendants of the original Nerney family.

Margaret's siblings, their baptism date, sponsors and address at baptism are as follows:

John, Baptised, 7 Jul 1809, Sponsors: not known, Address: Not given.
Eleanor, Baptised,15 Jun 1811, Sponsors: not known, Address: Culleen.
Mary, Baptised, 14 Jun 1813, Sponsors; not known, Address: Culleen.
Thomas, Baptised 8 Jan 1816, Sponsors: not known, Address: Culleen.
Margaret, Baptised 14 Apr 1826, Sponsors: Pat Conor and Brigid Kane. Address: Tubbermurree.

It is know that some of the family moved in haste to USA following the death of a landlord’s dog.

Please provide details of the names and birth order of Thomas’ children.

Hi John thanks for your prompt reply.
I have had a lot of problem's tracing these Nurtney most due to the fact that the transcriber when entering the surnames as recorded the family name as Hurtney Furtney and Puntney. In 1861 Census Thomas is listed as being born Ireland about 1819 Bridget his wife 1817 Mary 1848 Ann 1849 all born Ireland James my Great grand dad 1854 and Margaret 1860 Manchester England.

1881 census James is living with Elizabeth Shaw they don’t actually get married till 1892 but she used the name Nurtney. they lived Granby row Manchester in the same building but with another family not known to our family is Thomas listed as boarder born Roscommon 1821. I know there are various ways of spelling Nurtney and their ages change but before they come to England I just don’t know were to start look for them or what sites to search. I also have another Irish Family on my dad’s side and they are called Dervin but I think they came from Dublin

I would be grateful of any information

Anne

I also research Nerneys and still have Nerney relatives in Roscommon.

From what I have learnt there are 2 branches of the Nerneys in Roscommon. The larger are those from in and around Elphin where they are associated with the church there, (Nerney is an anglicised version of Mac An Ereneagh - erenagh being a hereditary "caretaker" of a religious establishment) The other branch, my own, are in the Slieve Bann area and are associated with the abbey that once stood at Cloontuskert.

If you had even a townland name you would be able to narrow it down. Interestingly though I see you mention Manchester, many years ago some of our Nerneys lived in Manchester beofre moving to New Zealand, so perhaps we have a connection.

The reason for the mis-spelling of the name, as you may be aware, is that when pronounced in an Irish accent - with the clipped R it comes across as Nertney or sometimes Nuttney.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your reply, I have had trouble finding anything about my Irish Familys as when they came to England the census recorder on 1861 1881 1891 spelt the surname as Furntney Hurtney and Puntney. I am going to send for the birth certificate of James Nurtney 1854 my great grand father and the death cert of Thomas 1820-1888. I noticed on the birth index there is no record for a James Nurtney born 1854 but there is one for James Nertney 1854

I will keep on trying to see if I can find a town

Cheers Anne
