Kirkwoods in Roscommon, 1800s

Post by artwest »

In some old family documents I have found one which indicates (though only sketchily) that three of my ancestors were High Sheriffs of Roscommon. I would love to learn if this is true, especially as my wife and I may be making our first trip to Ireland next summer. I hope that someone may be able to either answer my question or to point me to someone who can. The people involved would have been (this is how it is shown on the document):
James Kirkwood, J.P., High Sheriff (no dates given)
his son Thomas Kirkwood, Esq., J.P., High Sheriff in 1808
and his son James Kirkwood, Esq., J.P., High Sheriff in 1848, died in 1862.
From James it would have been four more generations to my Father Thomas Kirkwood West, and five to me, Arthur Kirkwood West. Can anyone help me in any way toward my goal of learning more about these three people? Thanks.

You should read "Woodbrook," by David Thomson published in 1974. I understand that the Kirkwood's are still in Woodbrook which in on the Boyle to Carrick-on-Shannon road. Their house is a private dwelling.

Thank you so much. I'll look for the book. Maybe we'll even be able to visit the place.

Hello Art

As part of larger project I am working on, I have compiled short bios of several members of the Roscommon born Kirkwoods. Many of the entries are still work in progress, but if you let me have your email address by clicking "email" at the bottom of this message I will send you what I have collected to date.

I have just received a book called "St Michaels Church 1856-2006.
This book has been published in connection with the 150th anniversary of this church and it gives a history of the area. Included in this history is an account of the Kirkwood family.
If you want to get a copy of this book email-----jk99@eircom.net and John may be able to help you.

Failing this let me know and I will try to scan the section for you.
All the best for 2007.

Regards,
Peter.
