There is a new local interest website which was recently launched for the Clonown area in South Roscommon - http://www.clonown.com

This website, www.clonown.com, which is an on-going project, will include pages on Clonown's history, wildlife and current events. A new edition of the Clonown Newsletter will be available each month.

The launch co-incides with a new local interest book to be launched on the 15th November 2006 at 8.00pm in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone.

The book is entitled "A Sense of Place - Clonown, A County Roscommon Shannonside Community" and covers history, culture, environment of Clonown and the surrounding areas of Drumlosh, Carricknaughten and Curraghnaboll. It deals with emigration, evictions, folklore, weatherlore, schools, police, Shannon flooding, the country shop, wedding customs, census data, fairs and markets, childhood memories and wildlife. Hi Anthony, I was wondering if you could tell me where I could purchase a copy of the 1st book on Clonown History, Tradition and Culture of a South Roscommon Community. I know the book was short printed and sold to the local community but if you could help me find a copy I would appreciate it. Thanks Tom Kinsella

Tom, the 1989 book is very scarce. Keep an eye out for them at www.kennys.ie or even at www.abebooks.com (or google)

Even www.ebay.ie may have a copy from time to time. I don't own a copy, just borrowed one for a while. (I am only 4 years living in the area)

In fact the new book has being edited (and written) by some of the people involved in the 1989 book. There will be details on how to buy the new book in the next week at http://www.clonown.com. An interesting inclusion in the new book is the 1911 census data for the Clonown and surrounding areas which will be of interest to you Tom.

Hi Anthony, Thanks a lot for the help, I left email at both of the book stores on a want list. My great grandfather's family is listed in the 1st Clonoun book and I hope in the second book. I did make contact with his grand daughter by his 2nd marriage and she is trying to assist me also. Thanks again and Best Wishes Tom
