New boy here saying hello to all. Just testing that I can actually create a new topic and post it from my tempermental computer. Just registered onto this interesting Bulletin Board after being told about it last Sunday while in Boyle doing a bit of family researching....so thank you King House. I am a novice but my family tree research has currently "swung direction" into the Leitrim area

Thanks Mairead and Antog for your kind words. The Boyle connection ?.

The Connaught Rangers used Mohill area in the 1880's
and 1890's as a place to recruit and this is how as a child John McManus
when of age enlisted in to the Devils Own. He did not enlist at King
House but joined up at Galway. Antog, Boyle at the moment is not really a
family root connection (Its Fenagh and Mohill for certain) but its where
John McManus was stationed after being transferrred from 2nd Btn Conn
Rangers which was based in Poona, India to the 3rd Btn during 1909. He had
been in India since being drafted from the the 1st Btn in South Africa
after serving in the Great Boer War were he had been since 1899.
Imagine serving 10 years overseas in a hot climate to go back to Ireland, a
real climate shock for those lads ? The 3rd Btn was the Depot Btn of
the Regiment stationed in Renmore Barracks, Co. Galway which I visted
last year. He was involved in recruitment duties there before being
stationed to the Regimental depot at Renmore as a drill instructor were the
big highlight of the year was a two week training camp excerise at
Ornamore. He remained there until August 1914 before the btn was mobilised
for service to guard the coastal defences of Queenstown. Based at
Kinsale camp he remained there until 1917 before being drafted into the 6th
Connaught Rangers who were serving in France and Flanders. I could go on
but thats the Boyle connection. However from King House infoormation John McManus was born in either steam/streamtown. Anyone know of such a town or town land in Ireland. Was told it was in Meath ?It was very difficult to read

as well as county Lietriem

Best of luck with your research.

It may be nothing but the townland of Drumharkan Glebe (immediately south of Cloone village) has an area called Streamstown within it. This was one of the older townlands swept up in the mapping of Ireland in the 1830's.

Unfortunately I can't see any McManus there in 1901, or in Griffiths or in the Tithe or in the parish records 1823 - 1837.

What were his parents names (especially his mother's maiden name)?

. His father was called William and his mothers name was Agnes. His mothers maiden name was Payne.

Sorry. I can't see any William McManus in the area or a Payne family.

However I have not looked at the later parish records.

Thats one direct hit. Just checked the census out. Its does not get any better then that. The 11 year old Agnes was my grandmother and born in Bandon Co.Cork. My dad could not believe it when he read it.

What is very revealing is that my great grandmother was widowed in 1901. How and when is still the unsolved question. Just discovered from her death notice that her husband William was orginally from Ballyjamesduff, Co.Cavan.

Is a silly question but when its says King Co and Queens Co as birth places were exactly is this in IRELAND
