I am related to a number of Shannons who lived (and my Uncle John Shannon, who still lives) in Strokestown. My Great Grandfather was Patrick Shannon and he lived and raised his family on the Townland of Tully. We believe his father was named Peter Shannon. Other Shannon relatives lived on the nearby Townlands of Coggalbeg and Lisheenanierin. You can see Tully and Coggalbeg on the map (on this website) for the Civil Parish of Kilbride. Lisheenanierin is in the adjacent Civil Parish of Cloonfinlough, for which there is not yet a map. All are in the R.C. Parish of Kilbride, now Fourmilehouse.
I know that My Great-Grandfather (born c. 1813) had a sister Anne (born late 1820's) who married Michael O'Connor and a sister Catherine (born c. 1830) who married Patrick Hunt. My Mother (1907-2006) was born on Tully but lived in Providence from 1925 to her death last year. She was in contact with descendants of the O'Connor and Hunt families who lived in Rhode Island and New York.
We believe my Great Grandfather Patrick had a sister Mary who married Michael Gavican. Descendants of the Gavicans lived in Providence. Other Shannon relatives named Head lived in Providence and Feeny lived in Blackstone and Millville, Mass. [possibly related to Patrick's Mother, whom we think may have been a Feeny.]
We also believe that Patrick had at least one and probably more brothers whose names we do not know, based on the spread in ages between Patrick and his sisters.
Do you have any idea what Townland your ancestors lived on? If it was on or near one of the three I described above, I think it is quite likely that your John was a brother or at least a relative of my Great Grandfather Patrick. Nancy

The above entry is from Ed Gaffney’s list.

378 is the page number in the register. It will show the townland of birth and father’s occupation.
Once you know the townland you can check the 1901 Census records on this website. You can also check the LDS film showing change of occupiers of land in the towland from 1856 to c1920.
I suggest you check for Roscommon research material at the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston.
