John Gaffney & Margaret Nangle/Roscommon

John and Margaret Gaffney (3rd ggrandparents) emigrated from Ireland to Canada in June 1847. Family story states they walked to Sligo and took a ship the "Alan Kerr". Children with them were Mary b.1831, Bridget b.1832, John b.1837, Ann b.1841, Eliza b.1844 and Margaret b.1846. There was another baby who died on the voyage and Margaret died shortly after arrival in Canada. John Gaffney is the son of John Gaffney and Julia McGuirl - Margaret is the daughter of James Nangle and Mary Gaffney. John died shortly after arriving in Canada and the children were adopted into separate families. Margaret later remarried Thomas Higgins who was also from Roscommon. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have further information.<br>Barb

Gaffney is plentiful in Kilronan parish and McGirl is a Lough Allen area name. Kilronan is the northern-most parish in Roscommon - making it a bit easier to walk to Sligo town. Lough Allen forms part of the border between Kilronan parish and county Leitrim. Good luck.

Yes, Barb, Tom McFadden is correct. In a quick check of the Kilronan Parish Records, I found the baptism of your John Gaffney on 29 Jun 1837 and Elizabeth Gaffney on 16 Sep 1844. Parents Ionem (John) Gaffney and Margaritam (Margaret) Nangle. No townlands are mentioned, but one of the sponsors was a Guihan, and many Guihans (including my Wynn ancestors) were to be found along the west bank of Lough Allen, in the townlands of Srabragan, Greagh and Corgorman.<p>The relevant Kilronan records can be viewed (with considerable difficulty) on the LDS 16mm film #1279224. These records have an unfortunate gap between 1829 and 1835. They are blotchy, faded, and in Latin (but better than nothing).
