O'REILLY of ROSCOMMON

Post by Kathleen O'Reilly Jacoby »

I am seeking information on John O'Reilly. Born about 1850, married a woman whose surname was NEARY. John fathered 5 known children. Luke came to US in 1902, Rose was a Nun in western Australia, Mathew was a preist in Carrick-On-Shannon, Alice married a Peter Neary (second marriage for her), Jack/John was wounded or KIA WWI. There may be another daughtER NAmED Ann, who had a son John. John was somehow connected with St. Mels Cathedral in Longford. The name Slattagh appears in family records, but cannot be identified by elders. Slattagh (sp) may hold family records.

John was born in 1822 and emigrated to America in 1848. Six siblings followed him: Bridget, Mary, Hugh, Ann, Michael, and Alice. They settled in Rhode Island and Connecticut. In the 1860s, a Thomas Riley (wife Ann Colghan), both born 1840s in Roscommon, settled near them. This Thomas was the son of Luke Riley. In my search, I have gathered records on all Rileys I could find in Kilglass. I have information on the baptisms on Oct. 4, 1866, of a Maria Riely to John Rielly and Rosanna Neary of Mogher and of a Rosanna Riely on Aug. 8, 1867, to John Reily and Rosa Neary also of Mogher. The TAB and Griffith's both list a John Riely in Slattaghmore. Please contact me so we can explore further. Thanks.
The information posted is nearly all I have. Luke is thought to have jumped ship in New York Harbor about 1902 ( from a British M.O.W. ), and entered the U.S. illegally. He had a unfriendly disposition, and went silent to his grave in 1946. Few facts about his life can be considered reliable. One of his daughters may have his journal and other papers in her possesion. She is resistant to inquiry, and will probably go to her grave having never released anything further.

I only got part of the message.
I belive the answer to your question about Lukes particulars is "no." I don't believe a word of it. He died before I was born, and all I have is anecdotal information to go on. How "unfriendly" can a man that fathered 9 children be? He probably was aloof rather than "unfriendly."
I know first hand, he loved literature & poetry. He was intelligent. He valued education, and probably would have been a scholar had circumstances allowed. When all the facts are found. I would not be surprised to find that he was a very different person.
Yes, I will continue to research the ship incident. I don't have much to add. It may not have been N.Y. I am speculating on that.
If you have records to that effect, please forward them or give me a email address that works.
KJ
