The NYC Shanley Restaurant Brothers from County Leitrim, Ireland Michael Shanley (b. in Maher, Annaduff, Leitrim, Ireland) married Margaret Faughnan in the late 1850s. They had 10 children; John (born circa 1858 Leitrim, Ireland) Thomas J. (b. Nov. 18, 1859 Rinn, Leitrim, Ireland) Bernard Francis "Barney" (b. March 1861 Leitrim, Ireland) Michael J. (b. Sept. 8, 1866 Rinn, Leitrim, Ireland) Patrick J. (b. May 1868 Leitrim, Ireland) Andrew E. b. Oct 30, 1869 Rinn, Leitrim, Ireland) Peter F. (b. Leitrm, Ireland) James L (b. Leitrim, Ireland) Anne "Annie" – b. Leitrim, Ireland - married James Hickey Mary – b. Leitrim, Ireland – married name Burbage Michael worked the family farm and brokered livestock sales for him self and his neighbors. He and Margaret also ran a country grocery and a Pub. Michael died of pneumonia, leaving Margaret "Monnie" to raise 10 children. They managed and when Thomas J. was a teenager Margaret sold one of her cows to pay passage for Thomas (& Barney) to the United States. John, being the oldest, stayed to run the family farm. Thomas sent passage home and one by one all of his siblings, except John and Mary, arrived in New York City between 1885 & 1895. Sending money home often. The other siblings were making the trip to America. The brothers elected Thomas to serve as President of the Shanley’s restaurants in NYC. Thomas also managed the restaurant on 42nd and Broadway, which opened in 1896. Eventually two brothers would run each of the 3 restaurants. Thomas apparently had a sense of humor, on Oct. 13, 1897 the 42nd and Broadway restaurant had an electrical fire in the boiler room, when the firemen arrived Thomas had the orchestra strike up “There’ll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight”. He married Sarah L. Quinn in 1885. Sarah was born in 1862, NY, NY. She had a brother James Quinn b. May 1855. Thomas J. and Sarah had 4 children; Thomas Jr. b. He too would join the brother’s in operating the Shanley restaurants. Peter married Margaret T. Carroll (b. circa 1875, Ireland). They had 6 children; Helen b. circa 1903 NYC Lawrence P. b. 1905 NYC Marion b. 1907 NYC Margurita (b. circa 1909 NYC, married name Hallahan) Anna b. 1911 NYC Irene b. 1914 NYC Two additional married names, Mrs William Gebhard and Mrs. Benjamin Ashley. Thank you for this wonderful research. You state that the Shanley Hotel was in Napanoch, Long Island, but Napanoch is in Ulster County, near Ellenville, NY, not in Long Island. So many of the names resonate in my family. These people sound like cousins to my great grandfather. The Names listed below are very familar in my Shanley Line. Do you know if any of these Shanleys immagrtaed to Germany First then to America? I have a letter that says the name Bernard Shanley has been in my family line since the early 1700's. My great grandfathers name is John Shanley, and his father & brother were named Bernard. My great grandfathers brother Bernard had 2 sons named Bernard and Francis.My John(born 1867) lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan and he married Mary Sparrow, and their sons were James and John.
