Glackaunadarragh

Post by Jean Ebert »

Hello,
My paternal grandmother, Margaret Frances O'Dowd Kelly, listed her place of birth as Gluckewn, Co. Leitrim, on her original SS app.
I have been informed by some helpful people that the locals referred toit as Gluckewn, or Gluckaun, or Glackaun, but that it is
Glackaunadarragh. I have been unable to find this on any map. Does anyone know about where in Co. Leitrim this is? Near what town?
Thanks for any assistance.
Jean

Hi Jean,
I spent a lot of time trying to track down Glackaunadarragh, because I too have ancestors from there - Dowds and Laydons. Unfortunately they always referred to it as "Glan". I eventually did find out its "official" name, and located it in the Arigna valley. You may find some snippets of interest on my website at the following page:
http://www.patrick-brennan.com/rowanhis ... Patrick
With the upper half forested since about 1960 onwards. The Valley extends into three counties, Sligo, Leitrim, and Roscommon. If you look at a map of Ireland and see where the three counties meet the corner of leitrim is Glaukaun.
Forestry is particularly extensive in Glukaun and the Gluckaun school closed in about 1959.
