Then thank the Good Lord for Ed Finn and his pages.

In fact,
we may even be distant relatives. My great-grandmother was Bridget Brennan,
who married John Naughton in the 1850s and lived in Runnaroddan in Kilnamanagh
Parish, literally next door to the two local "Tonroes"--Tonroe or Feenagh and
Tonroe or Creen. In fact, the school where John Naughton was the National School
teacher--adjacent to their home--was virtually on the border with both Tonroes.
Researching the Brennans of the area gave me the following info which might
interest you:
1. The 1749 Elphin Diocesan survey showed "Tonroe" in Kilnamanagh
Parish including "Brian Brennan and his wife,Catharine Brennan,"
with two children. There were also other Brennans and McDermotts living nearby.
2. Griffith's Valuation of the 1850s showed on Tonroe or Creen:
Patrick Brennan, Francis Brennan, Cormack Brennan, and John McDermott
3. The Valuation Lists for the Electoral Division of Breedoge follows the hitory
of the property held by the Brennans and McDermotts. (You can find that on microfilm
reel #0867949 at the LDS Family History Center.
4. The 1901 Census also provides info on Brennans and McDermotts who remained on that
property in Tonroe.
5. One of your best sources is the RC Church record of Breedoge and Ballinameen, which
is reel #989,738 at the LDS FHC. Unfortunately, it doesn't start until 1859, but you'll
find many Brennans and McDermotts listed as being parents of children and getting married
in the church--some identified as being from "Tonroe."
6. The LDS's International Genealogical Index listing for Brennans in County Roscommon will
also provide you many listings of Brennans and McDermotts identified as in the parish of
"Breedogue and Ballinameen." Some examples:
Michael Brennan married Sabina McDermott on Jan 28, 1875
Michael Brennan and Sabina McDermott had a daughter, Mary, in Jan 1876
Michael Brennan marriedd "Johannam" McDermott in Feb 1865
Winifrid Brennan married John McDermott on Feb 8, 1969
7. Perhaps as important, the church record identifies witnesses, which give
you more relatives.
You will also find some info on the Brennans, including a map showing the two Tonroes, in a narrative
I wrote on the "Naughtons in Ireland," which you can find on the optional URL listed below.
The best source on the Brennans of the area can be obtained from Patrick J Brennan, who wrote several messages
which you can find in the earliest archives of this Bulletin Board. He sent me a copy of his "Story of the
MacBranans," which you will find fascinating. You can also write him directly at pib@en.com
Needless to say, I also have additional info on the Brennans in Tonroe. You can contact me by e-mail at
iiaunau@erols.com.
Hope this helps.
Bill Naughton
