Re: cusack name
The family originated at Guienne in Normandy and took part in the Norman conquest of England.
Geoffrey and Andre de Cussac landed in Ireland with King John towards the end of the 12th century. They were granted lands in several parts of the Pale. Geoffrey had two sons, Christopher and Nicholas, who inherited castles at Killeen and Dunsany, Co.Meath,
A branch of the Killeen Cusack's went to Co.Mayo in the middle of the 13th Century, and there are records of a battle for land between them and the Barretts in the Barony of Tyrawley near Ballina.
In the 15th Century, Joan Cusack, an only daughter of Dunsany, married a member of the Plunkett family. The Plunketts have occupied Dunsany Castle ever since.
Up to Tudor times, the Cusack's were prominent in all branches of Irish life, but their continuing support for the Catholic cause ended their status as a leading family.
The Meath families were transplanted to Mayo, Clare, Leitrim, and Galway, and there they were reduced to the status of small farmers.
