Why Liverpool?

Can someone share with me why so many people from Ireland ended up living in Liverpool, England either temporarily or permanently? Was there a particular period of time when there was a "great" migration to Liverpool?
Thanks in advance for an info...

I think you'll find that Liverpool was no more blessed than many other Northern Industrial cities - from the time of the Famine onwards (1847+) the Irish emigrated in numbers to Glasgow and Tyneside as well as Liverpool - and of course the smart ones went to North America.
Patrick
PS - my own ancestors went to Tyneside - where I still live
: Can someone share with me why so many people from Ireland ended up living in Liverpool, England either temporarily or permanently? It was the main port to North America, and elsewhere, in sailing ship days. The folk with a few quid left, sailed, to North America and elsewhere. Those without stayed put ... thus you have the Beatles, et al.
Now, it would enlighten you to investigate who owned the ships and trace their offspring to today.
As the song says: "It's not the leavin' of Liverpool that grieves me ..."
