Kelly-Dorset, Vermont, USA

Post by Roger W. Lamson »

I am interested in sharing any information on the families of James Kelly(1826?-1889)of Dorset, Vermont and his wife, Margaret, who was perhaps the daughter of Barney Hanley of Manchester, VT. James and brother, Thomas, were living in Dorset in 1860 at the home of James and Ellen Handley. All were born in Ireland according to the census.
Immigration records point to Roscommon County. Griffith's indicates a likely origin in Termonbarry Parish. Numerous gravestones in the Catholic Cemetary at Dorset, VT refer to Roscommon County (O'Conner,McDonald, Diffley). It seems likely that the Kelly family that sailed on the "Channing" is the same one, but nothing is definitive. Even conclusive negative information is welcome.

We have some members with Hanley families in West Rutland. Please contact us and consider joining the Ballykilcline Society.

Roger,
My GGrandfather's sister, Nancy Jane Hanley married Thomas Kelly & they resided in Manchester, VT. They also are buried in the Catholic Cemetery, St Jerome's Cem. in East Dorset, Vt. I wonder if there is a connection?
The Kelly family arrived on the "Progress" from Ballykilcline, Parish Kilglass, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. (Check - Ballykilcline.com)
They were Patrick Kelly (b. 1808)& wife Eliza Cline (b.1812). The children I have listed for them are Thomas, William, Margaret, Anne,
Bridget & Maria.
Maria married Daniel Brennan & they lived in Poultney, VT. Daniel was the son of William Brennan & Nancy McGuire (arrived on the Creole, from Ballykilcline)
Nancy Jane Hanley, wife of Thomas Kelly, was born 1843 in West Rutland,Vt. the daughter of John Hanley & Sabina Brennan both of Ballykilcline. She was Daniel Brennan's sister.
I have several James Kelly's listed.....but none yet married to a Margaret.
Patrick Kelly b. 1808 (above) was the son of Patrick (b. abt 1770)& Ann Kelly (b. abt 1776). Brothers & sisters were Thomas, Terrance, Daniel, James (wife - Mary O'Connell), Eliza, Mary, Michael. Eliza Cline b. 1812 (above) was the daughter of William Cline.
^ James Kelly & Mary O'Connell above ^ were married in 1828 in Ballykilcline and had 8 children, but they moved to Mass.
I don't know if this is helpful or more confusing.
Keep digging!
A.M.
