Thomas and Carol Hawkes were sponsors at the wedding.
A Thomas Hawkes is listed on the property "Carrontrilla"- adjacent
to the school property.(according to "Tithe Applotment of 1825")
Martin moved to Cloofree School and lived on plot-72A(school was 71C) and his name was also on 75A "land of no value", in Griffiths Eval. Wehave no knowledge of Martins family or origin-but have some guesses:
1) since my grandfather , James Martin, was Martin's only son, we suspect Martins father was a James.
2) martin was from Kiltrustan Parish. This guess based on the fact that all of Martin and Ann's children were baptized in Kiltrustan Parish--although they lived in Cloonfree Parish of Cloonfinlough.
3) He had a brother James.
Martin died 3-21-1861(family tradition mentioned he was a champion rope jumper. He died while rope jumping!! We think Mary Ann and Catherine came after Bernard's death. Bernard(according to family lore-drowned while saving his son,James, from drowning.) since the small Lough Cunny is in front of the cottage site, we assumed it to be the place-("his feet caught in the lily pads.")
Mary Ann came to the USA on the White Star Line-"Celtic". She landed 9-22-1879. She married James Martin Beirne(later Burns)4-29-1886. **(For children see first Geneological Tree!!)
My wife , Marie and I have visited Roscommon several times-viewing Church records in Elphin and Strokestown.
any futher questions, info please e-mail to burnsbrothers@erols.com Donald Burns
