Catholic Churches in Kilmore Parish

Post by Ken Beirne »

My wife and I are about to wend our way back to Ireland for a couple of weeks, starting in May, and I am hoping to get some records on Patrick Beirne and Catherine Dunn, my great grandparents, who had their children in Kilmore Parish(I am hoping they were married there also, but who knows). Does anyone know where the Catholic Churches in Kilmore Parish are located, and their names?

The church (not named) apparently also serves Aughrim and the priest's address given was Rev. Patrick McHugh, Aughrim, Hillstreet, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon. good luck.
Mary Lee Dunn

I was just in Kilmore over Christmas in search of information on my Doyle ancestors. We also have some Beirne's married to Doyles.
Kilmore is an extremely small village. There is a big church when you drive in the village and there is a very old graveyard down by the Kilmore Inn with a ruin of the old church. That is the cemetary you probably want. There were alot of Beirnes in the old Kilmore, Jamestown and Aughrim cemetaries. The old part of the Aughrim (in Hill Street) cemetary is very overgrown. Next time we go we are bringing boots and gloves. The other two cemetaries were easy enough to navigate.
Mary is correct on the information she gave you. If you have a map that shows Kilmore, just head for that and just ask people along the way and they will direct you to the cemetaries. The signs pointing to Kilmore were pretty good. Kilmore is only about 2 miles from Carrick-on-Shannon which is where my husband I stayed overnight. There is the Landmark Hotel which is more the high end of accommodation, another smaller hotel (Bush Hotel) and plenty of B & B's. We stayed at was Aisling House. It was a standard B&B very clean and comfortable.
My husband and I stopped in the pub at the Kilmore Inn and got to talking to a older gentelman there who had stopped in for a pint. He actually knew the only two Doyle families in the area and where they were located. We were only there for one night so I didn't get to look at the church records but met some possible distant Doyle cousins through the help of the man in the Kilmore Inn. I have more research to do to connect my family to the Doyles I met but the name Luke Doyle seems to appear throughout all the generations in their family and ours.
I have a posting on the bulletin board Doyle/Quinn/Beirne posted 10/31/200 if you would like to see if there is a possible connection. I also have some information on a Benard Beirne who I believe was one of the first people to immigrate from the Carrick-on-Shannon area to the town of Macedon just outside of Rochester, NY. It seems several families from that area immigrated to this town in upstate New York in the mid-1800's.

Kilmore is part of Aughrim parish. Kilmore R.C. church is referred to as Dangan. It is located at the south end of the village of Kilmore. Kilmore graveyard is adjacent to the Church of Ireland (Protestant)church. There lie the remains of both Catholics and Protestants
: : My wife and I are about to wend our way back to Ireland for a couple of weeks, starting in May, and I am hoping to get some records on Patrick Beirne and Catherine Dunn, my great grandparents, who had their children in Kilmore Parish(I am hoping they were married there also, but who knows).
