Confederate Veterans of American Civil War
Faugh A Ballagh!
Much has been written about Thomas F. Meagher, The Irish Brigade and other Irish fighting for the preservation of the Union. Few people are probably aware that many Irish fought for The Confedercy. Their numbers were probably equal when viewed as a percentage of the population. For example John Mitchel, the Irish nationalist, was a strong advocate of the Confederacy. He was imprisoned by the Union for his support of the South, two of his sons were killed, and another lost an arm fighting for the South. The linked book is a good starting point for learning about the Irish and the Confederacy.
JimC
