Kenny in Roscommon

Post by William Kenny »

My GGF was John Joseph Kenny born in Roscommon, Erie on October 25, 1869. He emmigrated to Ashtabula, Ohio by 1895 latest and married Mary Doran (of Wexford)in 1898. Unfortunately all of the more specicic info concerning Kenny family in Ireland was lost to us...
Roscommon as residence was confirmed in marriage and death info...
It seems very clear that family was Hy Many (Ui Maine - O' Cionnaoith sept) and most likely located for most of history more south in Roscommon (or perhaps southeast Galway) but there may have been movement by the family during or after the great hunger so it's hard to say.
The one clue that I have is the components of the our Kenny Family Name Coat of Arms -
The Shield is: Gold and blue with a fleur de lis between three crescents.
The Crest is: A hand grasping a roll of parchment.
The motto is: "Vincit Veritas" - Truth conquers
(I've seen others with "Teneat Luceat Floreat" but don't know what the difference would be...?)
While most of this about the crest is perhaps typical for this sept, the unique thing about ours would appear to be that it has a "chief" banner at the top of the shield (below the helm). On the chief is a hound chasing a stag.
Does this sound familiar? I would appreciate any help and will respond / reciprocate to all...Thanks! Bill Kenny

Official Registration has been required for all Births in Ireland since 1864 -John Joseph should have been registered if your dates are correct. Go to the Irish Times Geneology site http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/bro ... te/
for more info on how to look up these records.
: My GGF was John Joseph Kenny born in Roscommon, Erie on October 25, 1869. To locate the nearest FHC go to
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp
The films will only add info as to the Townland name and if the person regestering the birth is other than the father or mother it may give a clue to other relatives.
Gus
