Towey Clan is Officially Recognized

Post by Richard E. Towey »

The Toweys have received formal recognition as a clan by the Clans of
Ireland. This announcement was greeted with great elation by 45
members attending the clan rally on the weekend of April 14-15, 2001
at the Foxhunter Pub in Lucan, Co. Dublin. (Who knows how many others
might have attended if there had been no outbreak of foot and mouth
disease to contend with). After an evening of chat, music, dancing
and general merriment, the next afternoon was devoted to discussing
the origin of the family and how our surname was derived. There was
also a presentation on how and where to find available information
about our ancestors. Officers were elected for the coming year and
the constitution was approved. More will be said about these matters,
including the names of the new officers, when the Towey Clan web site
is set up in the near future.
The decision was made to meet in the U.S.A. during the year 2002, so
watch for an announcement of the time and location. Arrangements will
be coordinated by our newly elected chairperson, Patricia Toohey of
Connecticut. (Yes, the Toweys of Ballaghaderreen do spell the surname
in more than one way!). You can send congratulations to Pat at
patricia.toohey@worldnet.att.net
