Patsy,
From the LDS 1998 British Isles Vital Records Index CD:
ARMSTRONG, Wilhelmina Jane Birth
ancestor_gender: Female
Birth Date: 30 Aug 1870 Birthplace: Boyle No1, Ros, Ire
Recorded in: Civil Registration for Ireland
Father: Francis ARMSTRONG
Mother: Wilhelmina SLOAN
Source: FHL Number 101213 Dates: 1870-1870 Note: 101
FHL Number 101213 is the LDS microfilm of the actual Civil Birth Register.
Birthplace Boyle No 1, refers to Boyle Number One Registrar's District.
(Boyle Registrar's Districts Numbers One and Two were united on the 12th of July 1883 as the Registrar's District of Boyle.)
Note 101 means the Civil Birth is entered on page 101 of LDS Microfilm
101213.
If you look at the entry in the Civil Birth Register it will show the
townland of birth and the father's occupation.
Once you know the townland you can look at the Change of Occupiers of the land from 1857 to c1920 on LDS Continuing Valuations microfilm. The original Cancelled Land Books, or Cancellation Books, trace the tenancy of land from the time of the final Griffith's Valuation to the 1960's in some cases. The microfilms can be an extremely valuable resource despite the fact that some entries were made in coloured ink that does not show on the black & white microfilm. The books can be very useful in pinpointing a possible date of death or emigration, or in identifying a living relative as the succession dates often mark some significant event, such as death, a marriage, a serious illness, emigration. The original Cancelled Books can be viewed at the Valuations Office in Dublin.
If the family were Catholic you will find parochial records for the Catholicparishes of Kilbryan & Boyle (1793 - 1881) on microfilms 989743 & 989744. For microfilm details see the LDS Library Catalogue at www.familysearch.org/
Good luck in your research.
John
(I am searching for maps of the Catholic Parishes in Kilmore Diocese.)

I did know about Wilhelmina Jane, I have seen her grave at Boyle Church of Ireland graveyard - she died aged 16 years. Her mother, Wilhelmina Sloan, is my great-grandmother and I am interested in finding out more about her as well. Thank you for the stuff on LDS sources, I hope to spend some time looking into this when I get some time off. Regards, Patsy
