Anyone know if Irish immigrants would have been reluctant to give their actual townland names on the ship registry? From my searches, many are blank, others say Dublin.

I have noticed that in my ancestors, some gave the townland, some gave the town, some gave the port from which they left and in most cases spellings were off. Also, the transcribers must have had a bad time deciphering handwriting as well. Mary

Peter
My grandfather Left Ireland for the USA in 1923, along with his sister, (both came back in 1930) On their EI records they have Curraghroe, this is the name of the place were they went to church, several other relatives who went seem to have given the name of the nearest town or administrative centre, in much the same way that if someone from America asked me where I am from I would say London as opposed to the actual name of the place I live in.

: Anyone know if Irish immigrants would have been reluctant to give their actual townland names on the ship registry? Re: Ellis Island Records
Even today if you ask someone from Ireland where they come from they will not mention the townland. They will tell you the area or the closest town. The immigrants who left Ireland about 100 years ago never in their wildest dreams imagined that today you and I would be searching the Ellis Island website looking for information about them. For what it's worth, I have found a number of records on people I was unsure of by checking the Ship's Manifest. I find that people often travelled in groups and you may find other familiar names which helps confirm that you have the right individual. Good luck.

Re: Ellis Island Records
Not to be contrary, but I think it just varies with the individual; the relatives that I have found were listed by townland (although with improvised spellings). My mother always said that she was born in Eden (her townland)in 1914.
Sharon
