O'HANLEY

Post by P. Holmes »

Looking for O'Hanley's from Roscommon. They started off in Roscommon, but were sent to Scotland around 1800. Then they were given a land grant in Canada by King George before 1820. Not sure when they went to Canada, but they settled in Ontario (where the farm still exists and owned by the family.)
My direct line is with Ronald Donald O'Hanley (born around 1880.) His mother was a Mc/MacDonald, died when he was very young. He and a brother of his were cared for by a blind uncle (Neil or Angus O'Hanley), while his father and uncles tended to the farm. Angus, Neil and John seemed to be common first names in the family. Ronald eventually moved to Chicago, became an undertaker, married a Mary Ann Cathrine Healy, had several children (Mary, James, Jual, Eileen, Agnes).
If you have any information, please contact me.

Perhaps these names ring a bell:
The 1860 census for Manchester, Vermont (northern Bennington Co.) lists a Margaret Hanley, daughter of Barney and Bridget, born in Ireland ca. 1845-46. She is the only Margaret in that area with a birth date close to the one given on James and Margaret Kelly’s gravestone at St. Jerome’s Cemetery, in neighboring East Dorset.
Since James Kelly lived in Dorset with James Handley in 1860, mention of another Hanley, though spelled differently, suggests the possibility of a connection.
Bernard Hanley is buried near James and Margaret at St. Jerome’s. The headstone says that he was born Dec. 25, 1816 and died Sept. 27, 1891. With him is buried William Hanley who died Dec. 2, 1893, ae. 36 yrs. Nearby are two other graves of people that seem to be Bernard’s sister and brother: 1) Sarah Hanley, wife of Patrick Agan born in Roscommon Co. She died Mar. 13, 1891, ae. 72 yrs. He died May 24, 1895, ae. 90 yrs. With them is buried William Agan who died Mar. 28 1885, ae. 31 yrs.; 2) William Hanley who died Oct. 9, 1893 ae. 76 yrs., his wife, Honora, who died Oct. 31, 1882, ae 37 yrs.(sic), and Sarah L. Hanley (Oct 19, 1852-May 16 1947). Next to Bernard’s grave is the grave of Michael Cunningham (1833-1891) and his wife, Mary Mylott (1844-1926). The engraving says that he was born at Boyle, Co. Roscommon. A John Hanley, Sr. is buried at St. Jerome’s with his family, but the headstone gives no dates. It is in a location at the cemetery that seemingly sets it apart from the people mentioned above.
No Barney or Bernard Hanleys have been found in the Rutland Federal Court naturalization records for the period from 1801 to 1964. No Hanley’s appear in the Bennington County census index before 1860. The 1860 census for Manchester, VT. lists Barney Hanley as a farmer, ae. 42, and Bridget is ae. 39. Both were born in Ireland. They have four children: Margaret, 14, Marier (sic), 9, John, 11, Barnard, 6, and William, 4. The oldest child is listed as born in Ireland and the second oldest in Vermont, indicating that this family must have left Ireland between 1846 and 1851. (1860 Federal Census, Bennington Co., VT., p. 86, dwelling # 638, 662, 683, family # 660, 675, 683)
Other Hanleys lived in Manchester near Barney:
(1)William, farmer, ae. 44, his wife, Ann, ae. 37, Joyce (?), ae. 9, and Sarah, ae. 7, all born in Ireland; and
(2) James, farmer, ae. 43, his wife Mary, ae, 36, John, ae. 9, William, ae. 8, Margaret, ae. 6, James, ae. 3. The parents were born in Ireland, and the children in Vemont.
