I have a question that recently arose and would like to see if anyone
knows the answer. Many FHS microfilms have beginning dates in the mid-
19th century. For example, Ardcarn & Tumna start in 1843. The question
I have is whether it is possible or likely that pre-1843 births and
marriages in that area were recorded in a neighboring parish? For example
again, could the pre-1843 births and marriages have been recorded in
Boyle before then? Boyle would have been a bigger parish and might
have been the collection point for the smaller parishes in the area before
they started collecting their own.
By the way, the opening page of the Ardcarn & Tumna microfilm has a note
from the priest who started it telling the reader that the book in which
he was recording the births and marriages cost him seven shillings and
asking the future reader to remember him in their prayers for that!
He also interspersed poetry and other observations from time to time in
book which are naturally recorded on the microfilms. The message here
that there are not just names in those books.
Any help anyone could give on how to find births and marriages before
the effective dates of the parish records would be appreciated:
particularly whether looking in a neighborhing parish with older records
might help. Many thanks.

FHS Film Dates
Re: FHS Film Dates
You may find part of the answer (at least for Catholics) in a little history reading on conditions prior to and after the Catholic Emmancipation Act of 1829. I believe that prior to emmancipation it was illegal for Catholics to keep registers etc.
: I have a question that recently arose and would like to see if anyone
: knows the answer.
