Hopkins- Frenchpark, Co, Roscommon

Post by Kathy Ludwig »

I was able to locate the birth and baptisimal certificates for my grandmother with matching dates for 1867 as being her year of birth. Yet, in all the documents in New Jersey about her (she came over to the USA in the late 1800's), the birth date year is later. Her death certificate is showing her date of birth as 1873. Is it common for the dates of birth and ages given for the ancestors who came over to the USA to be incorrect when they get to USA? Has anyone else run into this situation when doing research on relatives? Thanks.

I've come across this a few times. The reason could be simply bad handwriting on immigration documentation on arrival in the US. Whatever date of birth etc that was recorded on arrival would have "stuck" as such.
I've also come across situations where people lied about their age on arrival in the US. This may be to make themselves old enough or young enough to secure certain types of employment etc.
I would assume that the 1867 date is correct.
