Lady Betty of Roscommon (1758 to 1824?)

Post by Brian F O'Carroll »

I would like to get some info on the last hangwoman who operated from the Old Jail at Roscommon Town. Her name may have been Elizabeth Dolan or McDermott, but has been known only as Lady Betty . Sir William Wilde wrote of her and in recent times the Irish Folklore Commission had some information on her.

I am arranging a plaque on the wall of the Old Jail in commemeration of her existence and wish to get as much info as possible. Can anyoneehelp ?

What history of hangwomen exists? I've always thought
that sort of thing was a man's job. It would be
interesting to know of this trivia.
