Sweeneys from Roscommon

Post by Ed Sweeney »

The only connection I can make with my Irish forbears is a US Naturalization Certificate dated October 5, 1868, for my great grandfather Martin Sweeney, who was naturalized in Boston, Massachusetts on that day. The paper states his occupation as "Laborer" and that he was born in "County Roscommon". A visit to Sacred Heart Church in Roscommon Town several years ago, disclosed a Martin Sweeney being born there on October 26, 1825. Father, Eugene Sweeney and mother, Bridget (Berane or maybe Byrne) Sweeney. It's a "long shot" that Martin emigrated to the US at age 43, but he may have been here much earlier. His siblings were Bridget, Eugene, Mary and Terence. Would like to hear from anyone who might have the slightest snippet of information about the Sweeney's of Roscommon--then or now.
Edward Sweeney

Edward:
I have a photo of a page from the parish marriage register in Strokestown Catholic Church ("on the town square" is what I was told) - dated 1840 - a Martin Sweeney is listed as the witness for the first marriage on the page. If you would lke me to email you a copy of this photo, let me know.
Cassie
: The only connection I can make with my Irish forbears is a US Naturalization Certificate dated October 5, 1868, for my great grandfather Martin Sweeney, who was naturalized in Boston, Massachusetts on that day. You were looking for any snippet. Well I have a Brigid Sweeney married to Bernard Eardly with children born from 1884 - 1897. Townland is Corgorman. The interesting thing is i have not seen the name Eugene very often in my long searches for my O'Rorke's and Eardly families but in the same Townland there is a Eugene Eardly married to a Mary Guihan/Wynn and i am sure they are connected to my ancestors but can't make the connection. It may be that the name Eugene and Sweeney may be your connection for some years earlier - good luck it is a snippet.
ann

: Edward:
: I have a photo of a page from the parish marriage register in Strokestown Catholic Church ("on the town square" is what I was told) - dated 1840 - a Martin Sweeney is listed as the witness for the first marriage on the page.
