I have been doing research on my family & was hoping for some information. My gg grandfather was named Michael Francis Gaffney who was from the Roscommon/Leitrim area. He immigrated to the US between 1840 and 1850. He served in the US Civil War for the Union as a sargeant and was discharged for medical reasons (kicked by a mule). He settled in Philadelphia and had two sons: John and Michael. Michael Francis died from a lung disease caused from working with plaster in building new homes, leaving his wife to raise the 2 boys and a daughter from her first marriage. The boys were educated at Girard College for orphaned boys in North Philadelphia. His son, John was a Philadelphia Policeman and my great grandfather who had 3 children, Elizabeth, John, and Francis. John was my grandfather who was a prison guard in Philadelphia. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob Gaffney

My own branch of the family were associated with the Keadue area of Roscommon - Ardcarne, Kilronan and Cootehall are mentioned in their marriages and baptisms - and my ancestors farmed in Crosshill townland. My g.g.grandfather Patrick would probably have been of the same generation as your Michael but I don't know who his parents were or who his brothers or sisters were.

Ed. Gaffney
Gaffney
Hello you two - I'm Laurie Gaffney from Aystralia and I am trying to locate accurate B/D/M information on my gt grandfather's family. He was Thomas Gaffney and came to Australia in 1857. His father was John Gaffney and his mother was Mary Fitzgerald. He states on his emigration papers that he comes from Roscommon - but nothing more specific than that.I have had the Kilronan Parish records searched but no event for John Gaffney and Mary Fitzgerald comes up there.
I'll pass on anything I discover that may be of interest to you, Good luck, Laurie Gaffney
