If this is the 1881 Census record you are talking about, it shows the family came from Co. Down. However, the father'e name is given as John, and it is one of the children who is named Samuel:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dwelling: 9 Petersburn
Census Place: New Monkland, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203697 GRO Ref Volume 651-2 EnumDist 12 Page 3
Marr Age ancestor_gender Birthplace
John MACGOWAN M 41 M Down Co, Ireland
Rel: Head
Occ: Ironstone Miner
Mary MACGOWAN M 38 F Fermanagh Co, Ireland
Rel: Wife
Martha MACGOWAN 8 F Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Scholar
Bella MACGOWAN 6 F Drumgelloch, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Scholar
Samuel MACGOWAN 5 M Drumgelloch, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Elisabeth MACGOWAN 2 F Drumgelloch, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
William MACGOWAN 6 m M Petersburn, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
David MACGOWAN U 48 M Down Co, Ireland
Rel: Brother
Occ: Ironstone Miner
Further to the above, it's a pity you don't know the name of any other member of the family, or where they were living in Scotland, or how their names were spelt, as it would then be much easier to help you. For now, I'll add these two possibilities, as the spelling of the surname may have been changed a bit in Scotland:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dwelling: Drumgelloch
Census Place: New Monkland, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203697 GRO Ref Volume 651-2 EnumDist 13 Page 19
Marr Age ancestor_gender Birthplace
Samuel MC GOWAN M 42 M Down Co, Ireland
Rel: Head
Occ: Coal Miner
Mary MC GOWAN M 28 F Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Mary MC GOWAN U 11 F M...
