Post by Patricia Kenner »

My grandfather Bernard McGovern born 1873 came to New York in 1880 with Father Charles and mother Bridget (Kelly). Siblings of Bernard included Charles, John, James, Kate, Bessie, Philip,Rose and Maria. I am pretty sure James immigrated as well but have no information on other family members. Would love to hear from anyone who might have a connection or suggestions for this search. thank you patricia

I did some research and have been ther several times working on information. You have to realize that Balinamore was their Downtown, so a lot of the people who came here use that as thier address. My came from Fenagh wich is the connecting town to Balinamore.
If you e-mail me I will give you some detail on how I searched, and where I searched and what I came up with. Maybe I can provide some useful hints.
Chances are the McGoverns are related.

Patricia,
I also have McGoverns from Ballinamore. My McGovern emigrated in March of 1849 to NYC from Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim. The elder McGovern (my gg grandfather) was James, born 1793. His wife was Mary (Cullen) McGovern born 1794. Children were Bernard (1824), John (1827), Bridget (1828), Mary (1832), James (1838 & my g grandfather), and Ann (1841). So you can see that we share several given names. I am always interested in others with Bernard McGovern's. Based on the Irish naming scheme for their children my ggg grandfather should be a Bernard as well.
James McGovern, wife Mary, and the three daughters all stayed in NYC until their deaths. The three sons moved to the state of Mississippi, 2 of them in 1852 and the last in 1869.
Here is a link to my website if you ever get a chance to check it out.
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/us ...
