Through the LDS microfilm covering marriages, deaths, and baptisms in the Diocese of Elphin, RC Parish of Boyle, I have finally established that my ggfather PATRICK HIGGINS married ELLEN MCDERMOTT ROE in the Catholic diocese of Elphin, Roman Catholic parish of Boyle on 1 June 1853. They also had 2 daughters Anna and Catherine although I haven't seen a film of their baptism (older than the son), and a son EDWARD baptised, again in the Catholic diocese of Elphin, Roman Catholic parish of Boyle 4 Feb 1864. The names of the sponsors were<br>very difficult to read but the last names look to be a P??????? McDermott Roe and a ?????? McCormick. In scanning through the film, I saw only two others with the same spelling McDermott Roe, one an Edward, the other an Eleanorea (Eleanor?) but do not know if they are relatives.<p>The page noting the settlement of the cost (to baptise?)closest to Edward's baptism record said, "29th Aug 1864, settled by cash, and the name looks like 'Jos' M Tucker".<p>According to what I've been told, this family was supposed to have come to the US in 1865. I am pretty certain they were here in 1869 as a daughter was supposed to have been born in Red Oak, Iowa then but I've not been able to verify that. I have found them on the 1870 US Federal Census in Illinois - Hamilton, Hancock County where they remained until Patrick's accidental death in 1884. After that, the<br>rest of the family all moved to Decatur, Illinois, USA.<p>I haven't a clue how to begin tracing the family in Ireland nor how to find exactly when they left Ireland for the US or from where they left. He was a railroader in the US, as so many Irish were but don't know, of course, what he did in Ireland.<p><p><p><p><p>
