McDermott and Nieney Famly of Roscommon

Post by Maureen McDermott-Marella »

This is a longshot I'm sure. My great great great grandfather was James McDermott who married a woman named Mary Nieney (her name is also listed on records as Mary Neahny, Nearny). I believe James and Mary stayed in Ireland as did an elder of their children, however I know of three of their children that came to the US in the 1870's. We believe around 1870-1872.
Thomas J. McDermott was born to them in February 1853, his brother James was born in 1860 and sister Ellen born in 1856. Thomas died in 1895 while on a railcar in Pennsylvania and was struck by a train. James a coal minor died in 1920 of black lung disease and Ellen lived until 1939. All in the Clearfield/Blair area of Pennsylvania.
I have been searching for 25 years and can't pinpoint where in Ireland this family hailed from. In a delayed birth certificate of one of James children she listed County Longford, but in Ellen's death notice as well as James it says County Roscommon which is where we've been told for generations.
I'm hoping beyond hope someone can help me locate this family in Ireland or knows of this family.
Thank you in advance.
Maureen McDermott-Marella

I suspect Mary's last name likely is Nerney and Griffith's shows a number of them in Shankill, which I believe is not that far from Tibohine.
McDermotts seem more likely to be from Roscommon than Longford, historically, but it's possible that both records are correct. The counties adjoin. But with your family's oral history, I would focus on Roscommon.
It seems likely that James and Mary may have lived beyond 1864, when civil records began. You might request a search for their death records from the Western Health Board in Roscommon Town. Or for the marriage of the child who remained in Ireland if that individual got married and you have sufficient details.
There were plenty of McDermotts around Kilglass before 1850, as well as Nerneys there (Ballykilcline, for instance) and in Lissonuffy.
I hope this helps a bit. Good luck.
Mary Lee
