What to Do With Family Farm in Leitrim

Post by Mary »

Several yeas ago I inherited the 20-acre farm in Leitrim where my mother was born and raised. It has been in the family for over 100 years. For the past few years it has been rented to a neighboring farmer but I am planning on selling it (hoping to keep the small cottage and a few acres surrounding the house). Before I do this, am just looking to get some input from others on what they might do, other than sell, in a similar situation. Some of the land is along the roadside and there is the possibility of some building sites. Any ideas to pass along?

Wish I had the money to buy it from you. Do you have children who might like you to keep it as an inheritance for them? I get sentimental about land and love to see it stay in the family if possible, especially after 100 years. At least you will have the cottage. Sorry I'm not any help to you. I worry about the Irish landscape changing too much with the new prosperity there.

The goverment has a nice program to help subsidise the planting, and also pays you to keep it planted. This may be a way for your to keep your land, and also earn some income. You can contact the Forest Service Administration, Dept of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Johnstown Castle Estate, Wexford, Ireland. Fax 353 53 43834<p>
