The parish of Drum, located on the outskirts of Athlone in County Roscommon, is the present day home to 36 Lennon families and the ancestral home of countess other Lennon families throughout the world. The Drum Heritage Group, which has been in existence since 1987, has decided to organise a Lennon Homecoming over the weekend commencing Friday, June 20th 2003. The program will include visits to the Lennon homesteads and local historical sites, plenty of Irish entertainment and the annual Mass in the grounds of Drum monastic site followed by a baseball game.
The baseball game will commemorate the centenary of the victory by the Lennon Family team of Joliet, Illinois over the White Family team of Hammond, Indiana by a score of 18 runs to 1. The Joliet Herald News proclaimed the Lennon team “the champion baseball team of brothers in the world”. The father of the team along with his mother and eight siblings left Drum for the U.S. in the aftermath of the Famine.
If you are connected in any way to the Lennons of Drum and are interested in finding out more about the Homecoming, please e-mail mike.Lennon@ebs.ie. We are particularly interested in welcoming any U.S. Lennons who would be willing to participate in the baseball game.
