Gordon family, Co. Roscommon

Would anyone have more information on a Gordon family that originated in Scotland with a John Gordon (b. 1750, d. 1801). John Gordon moved to Ireland around the 1780s and settled in KILGARRIFF (Kilgarve)in the parish of FAIRYMOUNT (Tibohine) in Co. Roscommon. His son, Thomas (b. Abt 1875) married Anne Hunt and they had 8 children:1. Patrick (b. 1817, married Mary French from Frenchpark, had 11 children: Robert (lived in Australia) John (m. M. Connor from Elphin; they lived in Sheepwalk and had 8 children – see below) Patrick (lived in Co. Longford and had 5 daughters) Cormac (m. Dora Gordon, a cousin; they lived in Aughalusta and had 4 sons and 1 daughter) Thomas James (b. Abt 1850, m. May Cullen; they lived in Fairymount and later in Tuam; they had 11 children – see below) Frank (m. J. Doyle; they lived in Ballintubber and had 3 children – see below) Eliza (m. ‘unknown’ Byrne; they lived in the Frenchpark area) Marie (m. ‘unknown’ Coyne; they were shopkeepers in Castlerea) Anne (m. ‘unknown’ Flanagan; they lived in Castlerea) Ellen (m. ‘unknown’ Cullen; they ran a hotel in Frenchpark) 2. Michael (b. 1818, married ‘unknown’ Finn from Fairymount; they lived in Aughalusta and had 4 children: Pat Tom Michael Dora (m. Cormac Gordon, a cousin (see above); they lived in Aughalusta and had 4 sons and 1 daughter)3. Cormac (b. Abt 1820) 4. Thomas (b. 1822, d. 1901, m. Anne Foley from Breanamore(?) in Castlerea; they lived in Kilgarriff and had 16 children: Kathleen (b Abt 1862 in Kilgarriff, m. William Clarke; they lived in Castlemore and had 10 children – see below) Bridget (m. Laurence O’Hara; they lived in Boyle and had 8 children – see below) Michael ((b. 1860, married Sarah Murphy from Sligo; they lived in New Zealand and had 5 children) Mary (b. 1862, d. 1924) Annie (b. 1864) Pat (b. 1866, d. Helen, Legend in my famliy is that we originated in Scotland, came over to Monaghan and were then moved to Roscommon/Mayo area. I don't recognise any of the families you listed, but could you tell me if you know anymore about the move from Scotland to Ireland? Thanks,Louise

Louise, I'm probably not going to be of much help to you. I have heard that my John Gordon came to Ireland from Scotland as a member of the army of King James II of England. However the dates I've been given for John Gordon (b. 1750, d. 1801) don't tie in at all with this because James II was in Ireland in 1689-1690). If ever I get more information I'll post it here. Thanks. Accoding to family lore and a few scraps of paper, my grandfather, William Gordon (d. 1948)of Sheepwalk, emigrated to US (NYC)in about 1890. He married Bridget Brannelly (Ballygar/Mountbellew-Galway)and had two children John (my father)DOB 1910 and May DOB 1900 Mae Gordon never married and died in about 1953 about the same time as Bridget Brannelly Gordon died. John Gordon married Jane White (NYC) in 1946 and had 11 children.Kathleen (Egen) Cormac William John Peter Michael Mark Jean Suzanne (O'Brien) Jennifer (Hegerty) EmilyMost still reside in NYC metropolitan areaThere were also some Gordon relatives (Cousins) in the NYC area, one, a Roman Catholic priest, named William Gordon, who was ordained in Brooklyn in about 1945 and died about 10 years later. And there were several cousins who were Sisters of Charity who worked in the Harlem area of Manhattan into the 60s and who all must be gone by now.If I find further information I will forward it - Cormac Gordon
