Birthplace of grandfather

Post by Thomas P Hanley »

I am trying to find the birthplace of my Grandfather Thomas Hanley born c1860 in Ireland. Two of his brothers were said to have died in the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. He himself is shown on the 1891 Lancashire census in the village of Feniscowles near Blackburn where my father also Thomas was born and indeed myself. I understand that the first born son was always christened Thomas.
Would appreciate any help before I next visit Ireland in September 2003. My wife and I will be accompanied by a Peter McDermott and his wife and Peter will be looking for his Irish Roots!!

Thomas - your best place to start is th locate the death record of your grandfather - they usually indicate blace of birth. An alternative is to visit an LDS Family History Center. ask to see records under the following heading: (Ireland - Civil registration - Birth records of Ireland, 1864-1955). Civil registration began in 1864 and the birth of your grandfather (c1860) might be included if you are lucky. The third alternative is to locate his record on the Church Baptismal Registries, this can only be done if you know the parish to look for. For example at LDS FHC look up (Ireland, Leitrim, Cloone - Church records).
Good luck - JimC
