Military uniform

Post by Nuala »

I have received two photographs of my great-uncle from Roscommon in two different military uniforms around the time of WWI. Can anyone tell me how I can identify the uniforms. One is very ornate with sabre and pith hat, the other taken in Liverpool has no insignia. Thanks

Hi Nuala, dont know if this will help but i recently identified my grandfathers regt in ww1,did it off identifying his cap badge, although he too had been in two different regt during the conflict.Think this was due mainly to the horrendous losses that the local regiments suffered early in the war..Hope this helps Nuala..Kind regards,Kevin

Thanks Kevin, that was just the info I needed. I got a book from the library and there was the badge. He belonged to the 6th Dragoon Guards which were active between 1914-20. They "served" in France which is why my elderly Aunt thought he was in the French army. I will post the photos when I get a chance to edit themfor the web. Now I need to find out how to get his enlistment papers etc to see what dates are involved.
Again, many thanks :D
