Another Roscommon place name mystery: Lakefield?

Post by McWilliamofRushfield »

I just got my hands on a copy of the register page for my ggGrandparents' marriage. It states that the groom resided at "Lakefield" at the time of the marriage. They were married at Killukin Church near Carrick on Shannon on 21 February 1861.

My question to you, oracles of knowledge about Co. Roscommon, is, "Where is Lakefield"? I can find no reference to such a place in the indexes on this site. Does anyone recognize a similar place name in the norhtern part of the county near Boyle? I've found anecdotes in the past that put my ancestors near Camlin if that helps.

I've spent a couple of hours searching myself but in light of my lack of success I thought I should consult the authorities. You have not disappointed me, and I will keep my fingers crossed this time as well!

Hi Sonja,
Try the IreAtlas Townland database (which is also accessible from this site). http://www.seanruad.com/
You will find three Lakefield townlands in places other than County Roscommon. One of the three is in a neighboring County of Galway....not all that far away!

Good luck with your research.

Lakefield mystery

Post by McWilliamofRushfield »

Thanks very much Ed. I think I have found the right place; there is a Lakefield in Leitrim, not far from Carrick on Shannon, and it would seem to be the right place (at least it a logical place) for my ggGrandfather's residence at the time of his marriage.

To all of those who help others with their mysteries and questions, THANK YOU! Speaking only for myself, I couldn't have shattered so many long-standing brick walls without the help of the wonderful people on this site!
